History at Antietam Aqueduct on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, Washington County Maryland. This beautiful 140 ft, three arch stone structure is one of 11 such aqueducts on the canal. In July of 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early damaged the aqueduct to impede boat traffic. Mostly significantly, the stone berm wall seen here had been ripped out. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park is the backbone of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. The C&O Canal National Historical Park runs along 184.5 miles of the Potomac, and is "book-ended" by the Great Allegheny Passage in the northwest, and the Mount Vernon Trail to the southeast.
