That 1870's Homestead. . Come along as I harvest herbs from around my homestead. It’s late August, and while many of my plants are looking a bit rough, there’s still plenty to gather. I start by collecting shiso, a Japanese herb with a licorice-like flavor that’s great for teas and flower arrangements. I then move on to lemon balm, mint ...

In today's video, I take you along for a quick garden harvest after returning from vacation. With the help of our wonderful farm sitter, I didn't come back to an overwhelming amount of work, which was a blessing. I share what we brought in, including a big haul of green beans, my very first red noodle beans, and plenty of zucchini. I'll be preserving most of these by canning, shredding, or freezing them for use in recipes throughout the year. I also finally harvested some red cabbage, which I'll

Today, I’m taking you along as I find my new morning routine and share a glimpse into life on our farm. Each morning starts with getting our self-serve farmstand ready, which has become my daily joy. We stock it with seasonal delights like strawberry banana bread, cowboy candy, and honeysuckle syrup. It’s been thrilling to see how popular these items have become, especially after our grand opening where we sold out multiple times! I'll also introduce you to the latest addition to our homestead –

A few weeks ago we pulled up the carpet in our old farmhouse that was built back in the 1870s and discovered original hardwood floors underneath. We've got a floor sander / refinisher lined up for December 7th 2022, but before they come we need to get all the buckling floor boards fixed, and things leveled out. In the next couple of weeks, we'll be putting the first of our cold-hardy crops into the ground and begin the 2024 garden season. We're trying quite a few new things this year, with the first being the application of landscaping fabric in some areas - as a trial run to see how it goes. Not all of the things will grow will work well with this, so we're being selective and only installing in certain areas. We'll take you along with us on this video, and share the installation with you. We'll also

It's time for our annual "What To Expect" video - where we outline what we plan on accomplishing and filming during the year ahead. It'll be a different kind of year for sure, especially since we're letting our land rest this year - which mean no gardening. We have plenty of stuff in store for the year though, and we're excited to share all of it with you guys! We even held back a few surprises ♥ If you want to know more about why we're not gardening this year, check out this video https://youtu

Was doing a little digging today to find a little collection of old photos of our house - from years ago. I found most them, but sharing those with you will have to wait a couple of days. Mostly because I found this instead 🙂 I was cracking up laughing - so I had to share. This is one single clip, from a longer video posted a few years ago ♥ | That 1870's Homestead

Welcome to our 1870s Homestead! In this video, Rachel and Todd share the exciting progress of their barn renovation project. They've been hard at work uncovering the barn's original wood siding, removing the metal covering to reclaim its authentic history. Watch as they fix the sagging floor beam and prepare to install three beautiful downstairs windows, bringing new life to the old structure. Plus, don't miss the incredible discovery Rachel makes during the renovation—a piece of siding with the

Good morning, friends! Welcome back to the 1870s Homestead. I'm Rachel, and today I'm taking you along on my morning farm chores and giving you a full garden tour. It's a hot day ahead, so we'll start by opening the farm stand and making sure everything is well-watered. I'll show you our beautiful sunflowers and wildflowers, and we'll pick some green beans together. At the farm stand, we have fresh veggies, delicious peach jam, and more. I'll share updates on our electric fence setup for the chi

Welcome back to the 1870s Homestead, it's Rachel here. Today, I'm diving into the wonderful world of seed starting, and boy, am I excited! After some delay thanks to a visit from our exchange daughter, I'm finally getting my hands dirty with some celery seeds. Here in Southeast Michigan, we're gearing up for the gardening season, and celery is one of the first things on my list. I'm using Utah Celery seeds, and I'll walk you through my process step by step. From sanitizing my trays to choosing t

Hey friends, welcome back. I spent today outside shucking the first of our corn harvest and trying out a recipe I’ve never made before, corn relish. I share a little about a new YouTube channel I’ve been loving, show you how easy it is to get kernels off the cob with a mandolin, and explain why I never throw those cobs away. We get the brine simmering, chop up peppers, and mix everything together before canning it up in a simple water bath. I ended up with six pints of corn relish that I can’t w

It's time to start our peppers and basil indoors so we are ready this summer to plant out in the garden. This time of year it's so hard to contain myself because I just want to grow all the things and so much of it. But if I am not careful I will run out of space in our indoor growing station. Today's more like a gardening chat where I just talk to you while I am planting as if you were hear with me. | That 1870's Homestead

Today, I'm bringing you along for a late sweet potato harvest here at That 1870s Homestead. It’s only about two weeks past schedule, but, as you'll see, a lot can happen in that time! I was excited to see what our new landscape fabric would do for our crops, but, well, we had an unexpected visitor: mice. As I pulled up the vines and started digging, I discovered that many of my sweet potatoes were hollowed out, leaving only the skins behind. I suspect the landscape fabric might have created a co

Potatoes O'Brien can be used as breakfast potatoes, side dishes for dinner, or thrown into you favorite soups and stews. We love the versatility of this make ahead potato dish, straight from the freezer to the pan or oven they go. Hope you enjoyed another idea on preserving your potatoes ❤ My Recipe: 2 Cups cubed potatoes 1/3 cup diced sweet peppers 1/3 cup onion 1 tsp m

Today was a big step forward in my journey toward becoming a more capable and self-sufficient hunter. I finally completed my Michigan hunter safety course, and I’m taking you along for the whole experience. The morning started early, and we drove out to Saline for the required field day. I had already finished the online study course, which took about five hours and covered everything from firearm types to hunting ethics. It was thorough, and I came away with a real respect for the seriousness o

Hey everyone! So I finally made it back to the garden after basically ignoring it since Memorial Day, and I was prepared for total disaster. Plot twist: the Ruth Stout method actually saved my bacon! The old hay mulch has been doing all the heavy lifting, keeping most weeds under control while I've been living my best grandma life. The thistle is still being a drama queen, sneaking through every tiny crack in the cardboard, and something ate all my sweet potato plants (rude!). But honestly, I'm

So today I decided to make whole wheat flatbread. It’s been a while since we’ve had any kind of bread around here, so I figured why not? I ground the flour, mixed it with some Greek yogurt, and made a nice wet dough that cooked up soft and chewy on cast iron. While I was at it, I talked about hunting season—we got our first deer—and a few home things too, like taking the dining room table out again. I’ve also been using AI for meal planning and house routines, and it’s honestly been helping. Plu
