Crinoid facts: sea lilies and feather stars | Animal Fact Files
Crinoids are most well known for their impressive fossil forms, however, these plant-looking animals are still alive today. There are believed to be somewhere around 600 living, classified species of modern crinoids. Most crinoids of today are commonly known as feather stars and can be found in tropical waters and reef areas, however, the more ...

Crinoids Fossils

This is one of the most beautiful fossils you will EVER see. This is a spectacular crinoid colony. A Jurassic giant measuring over 100 square metres. It took 18 years to clean and prepare! Crinoids are often nicknamed sea lilies, but they are a type of echinoderm, related to sea urchins and starfish. This beauty comes from Holzmaden, Germany, and is on display at the excellent Hauff Museum. It was one of the 50 fossils featured in my book, LOCKED IN TIME. It was a pleasure examining this fabulou

These fossil crinoids look like something straight out of The Matrix 👀 Their curling arms and intricate structure are strikingly similar to the Sentinels from the first film — nature’s own sci-fi design, millions of years before Hollywood imagined it. 🌀💀 #Crinoids #Fossils #MatrixVibes #PaleoArt #NaturalHistory #SciFiMeetsScience #GreenRiverFormation #InStoneFossils | In Stone Fossils

Crinoid Feeding
0:27
When crinoid squat lobsters are feasting, they typically extend their specialized feeding appendages to catch food particles. These appendages, called setae, are equipped with fine hairs that trap tiny organisms and organic matter from the water column or surrounding environment. These are crinoid star fossils. Crinoids are marine animals that lived anciently and are still alive today (although, now they are sometimes called sea lilies or feather stars). Sometimes crinoids have star-shaped stalks/stems that they use to anchor themselves to coral or rocks. So, when you find a crinoid star, you are actually finding part of their stem. While most photos we post of crinoids (aka sea lilies or feather stars) show these animals firmly attached to a surface, did you know that many crinoids can in fact SWIM? Whoa. This footage was captured during the tenth dive of the Hohonu Moana: Exploring Deep Waters off Hawai’i expedition, on August 11, 2015, on a ridge that extends to the southeast of Salmon Bank in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. | NOAA Ocean Exploration
