The General Aviation Hamilcar was a cargo-carrying glider developed for British Airborne Forces. It could carry up to 8 tonnes into battle which was enough to carry one Light Tank, such as the M22 Locust. These were used during Operation Varsity, the crossing of the River Rhine. The Locusts replaced the anti-tank guns, Universal Carriers & Tetrarch tanks which Hamilcars carried on D-Day. The Museum has pieces of a Hamilcar that were recovered from a farm in Wiltshire and had been used as a shed!
