Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that Canadian and Mexican goods compliant with USMCA, the free-trade agreement President Trump signed with the countries in 2020, likely won’t have a tariff until next month.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Thursday said the one-month reprieve on hefty tariffs on goods imported from Mexico and Canada that has been granted to automotive products is likely to be extended to all products that comply with the U.

Ford, GM and Stellantis have been pressing Lutnick to exempt USMCA-compliant vehicles, while the United Auto Workers have pressed the administration to exempt key auto parts from tariffs that could slow auto production. The Detroit Three held a virtual meeting last week with Lutnick to make the case, two sources briefed on the meeting said.
