The U.S. Senate on Wednesday moved toward approval of President Donald Trump's plan for billions of dollars in cuts to funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting, which would hand Trump another victory as he exerts control over Congress.

The move to cut a sliver of previously approved spending comes after Republicans muscled Trump’s big tax and spending cut bill to approval in both chambers without any Democratic support.

The Senate voted by a razor-thin margin late Tuesday to advance debate on a package of funding cuts requested by President Trump that would claw back $1.1 billion previously allocated to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
