South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who lawmakers voted to impeach, was released from detention Saturday after spending nearly two months in custody under a criminal probe for his martial law declaration.

Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung said he respected the weekend court ruling but did not agree with its assessment that the indictment filing was past the legally allowed expiry time, which the court said made Yoon's detention while on trial illegal.

Amid rival mass rallies in Seoul, Yoon Suk Yeol is freed from detention as he faces trial on insurrection charges over his short-lived imposition of martial law.
