Zohran Mamdani has won New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary. A new vote count Tuesday under the city’s ranked choice voting system confirmed the progressive legislator’s stunning upset of former Gov.

Sources told CNN that Cuomo's team believes the general electorate could be more receptive to his candidacy than primary voters.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman representing northwest Queens, last month shocked the political establishment by trouncing the longtime front-runner, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whose name recognition, experience and support of billionaires and corporations, made him the favorite.
