Ballot scanner jams disrupted voting at 3 Travis County polling locations Monday, the first day of early voting in Texas. Election officials said backup procedures allow voters to submit their ballots securely. Voters reported scanners rejecting completed ballots at Lakeway Activity Center and Ben Hur Shrine Center on Monday afternoon. The county did not identify the third affected location or say when the problems would be resolved. The Travis County Clerk's Office said voters unable to wait can place completed ballots in an emergency compartment at the scanner's base. Election workers are trained to handle those ballots and ensure they are counted. Under Texas Secretary of State procedures, those ballots stay separate from ballots already processed by the scanner. They are transported to a central counting station, where election officials scan and count them. More substantial jams may require local law enforcement assistance to access machines and clear obstructions. Registered Travis County voters can cast ballots at any early voting location in the county.
Early voting allows voters to vote in person on whatever day they choose. Hours run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 29, according to the Secretary of the State’s Office.
