The Grizzlies will not spend their entire camp in Nashville. They will return to Memphis on Oct. 4 in preparation for their preseason opener on Oct. 7 at Dallas. Memphis's first home preseason game is Oct. 10 against the Charlotte Hornets.

This would be a second stint for Payton, 30, with his hometown NBA franchise. He played one season in New Orleans in 2018 as the team’s starting point guard.

The New Orleans native has been out of the NBA since 2022, but the Pelicans signed him to a training camp deal.

The Pelicans are beefing up their training camp roster with a pair of signings, including veteran point guard Elfrid Payton, per Andrew Lopez of ESPN. New Orleans is also signing guard Izaiah Brockington,
