Pfizer said on Thursday it will end global development of its hemophilia gene therapy, Beqvez, citing soft demand from patients and their doctors. Beqvez was approved in the U.S. last year, for the treatment of adults with moderate to severe hemophilia B.

According to multiple media reports on Thursday, Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) has terminated the global development and commercialization of its hemophilia B gene therapy, Beqvez. In April 2024, the FDA approved Beqvez for moderate to severe hemophilia B in adult patients who currently use factor IX prophylaxis therapy or have current or historical life-threatening hemorrhage,

Pfizer’s decision to halt further marketing of Beqvez is further sign of the sparse patient interest in gene therapies for the bleeding condition.

Pfizer will end the global commercialisation of its haemophilia gene therapy Beqvez (fidanacogene elaparvovec) amid low demand and interest.

The move comes weeks after Pfizer terminated its partnership with Sangamo Therapeutics for another hemophilia gene therapy.
