New Yorkers will soon have an extra day to get their Real ID or Enhanced ID before a May federal deadline, as the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has expanded its hours to include Saturday mornings and early afternoons starting next month.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles is encouraging New Yorkers to visit a DMV office to get a REAL ID or Enhanced ID as soon as possible, even if their license, permit or non-driver ID is not yet due for renewal.

The lines are long for people trying to obtain their real IDs, and they’ll only get longer, with the deadline exactly two months away as of Friday. New York’s Department of Motor Vehicles wants to help you out.

The DMV implemented several online tools, such as a document guide and an online application pre-screening process, to help New Yorkers prepare.

Longer hours at 10 downstate offices, including two on Long Island, are being held in advance of the May 7 deadline.

Starting in April, the Department of Motor Vehicles office on Staten Island will be open on Saturday to process Real ID applications for the upcoming deadline. Beginning April 5, various DMV offices in New York City and on Long Island will offer limited Saturday hours specifically for people who are applying for a Real ID or Enhanced ID.
